My journey began eight years ago, when my wife and I built a house in Wylie, Texas, and decided to move my mother up from Florida to live with us and help raise our two sons. Shortly after moving in, however, mother was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. As a restaurant executive, I traveled extensively, and with my wife also working, I soon found it very difficult to care for my mother and started looking for options. During my search, I began talking with the corporate office of one of the largest non-medical home care companies in the country. Through the course of these conversations, I learned more about them, and in turn, they learned more about me and my ability to assist small business owners in becoming successful. A short time later, they called and asked if I would be interested in helping their franchisees in the Southern United States grow their individual businesses.
After 20 years in the restaurant industry, I jumped at the chance to work with small business owners that were helping those in need, and spent the next five years working with them on all aspects of their business and helping to make them successful. One day I received a phone call from one of the company’s former vice presidents, who had left the previous year, letting me know that he was in the process of forming his own home care company and needed assistance building the framework of the business and developing all of the systems and tools. I was excited at the opportunity to help build a company from the ground up that was dedicated to doing the right thing, and soon joined the FirstLight HomeCare corporate staff. Over the next two years, FirstLight grew from a small start-up company to one with a presence from coast to coast.
With two young boys still at home, and having spent 25 years traveling around the country, I decided it was time to stay home to spend more time with my family and help the people of my local community. In June of 2011, I made the decision to transition from the corporate office to become a franchisee of FirstLight HomeCare in North Dallas–a transition my mother would certainly be proud of.
